Elevations RTC is always looking into more ways to help treat their students who have PTSD.

How Trauma Impacts Teens

Going through trauma at any age can be highly challenging. Teenagers usually have one of the toughest times dealing with trauma and its impact on them. With so much else changing around them, it can be daunting.  Figuring out how to cope with the trauma and start living a healthier life is a massive focus for the entire program at Elevations RTC.

Handling the Different Types of Trauma

Trauma can occur in a variety of ways that impact teenagers. For example, studies have shown that about one out of every four teenagers are affected by some sort of violence before they turn 18. It shows how common trauma can be, and how teenagers react to it plays a significant role.

From a mental health standpoint, handling the different types of trauma is essential. Although we can’t erase the past, Residential Treatment Centers like Elevations RTC strive to have the best programs available to help students develop positive coping skills to thrive in the future.

Some of the top therapies offered by Elevations RTC include Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, the 12-step model, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, and more. Depending on how the student reacts, they can see benefits right away.

Although you will most likely not see results overnight, dealing with trauma can take time, depending on each situation.

Support from Peers

One of the most powerful ways to find support is from others who have gone through similar experiences related to trauma. Teenagers may find it challenging to connect with someone back home in this type of setting.

Too many teenagers are lost in the shuffle at a big school while growing up. There are just not enough resources at a traditional middle or high school that provides individual attention. At Elevations RTC, the groups are smaller, and better relationships have the chance to form.

The story of why every teenager is at a residential treatment center varies. With some recovering from trauma issues in the past, they build connections while staying on campus that can help them heal.

Without realizing it, talking to another peer can help students learn new coping skills, process their trauma and provide the support they have been longing for. Later having a friend to turn to once back home helps students stay on the healthy path they are on. Peers on campus at Elevations RTC play a vast role more than they realize.

Dealing with Trauma Through Exercise

Whether dealing with trauma or any other mental health issue, you can find a great way to balance life by exercising and finding new hobbies. It would be impossible for the average student to succeed at Elevations RTC if every day consisted only of schoolwork and therapy

The campus setup allows students to stay active and enjoy life during some of their downtimes. Distractions always play a huge role in handling trauma the right way.

If teenagers can find something they genuinely enjoy, it’s a passion that’s easy to take home and utilize as a positive coping skill in managing day to day life.

Why PTSD Month Matters

Each June, PTSD awareness month is growing in popularity. It’s also a time for families to consider a residential treatment center for their loved ones who are struggling. During the summer months, many people start to apply to residential treatment centers or try to find other forms of therapy for students.

Having so many resources in one place makes Elevations RTC great for handling trauma issues with teenagers. Elevations RTC stands out due to its program’s high success rate with past students.
