Does your child’s internet use seem compulsive? Almost like they can’t live without a connection to the online world? They may have an internet addiction.

Internet or computer addiction has become a deadly issue in other countries like China and South Korea; in the United States we need to recognize and treat the issue before it starts taking lives.

What is internet addiction?

Internet addiction is characterized by the inability to go through the day without a form of technology connecting them to the internet. Much like a drug, when you take all devices away from someone struggling with an internet addiction, they become fidgety, uncomfortable, and sometimes extremely irrational.

In an article by The New Yorker, a specialist points out that internet addiction is a behavioral addiction that’s difficult to control because of our society’s increased dependence on the internet. This makes it hard for those struggling with it to help themselves.

What are the risks and signs?

Teens that have difficulty with connecting with others, depression, anxiety, stress, lack of social support, and other addictions have a higher risk of developing internet addiction. If your child fits one of these categories, it’s important to keep an eye out for the signs of addiction to the internet. Common signs include:

  • Pushing away others, isolating from family/friends
  • Decline in school performance
  • Neglecting tasks/responsibilities to be online
  • Change in sleep/eating patterns due to online overuse
  • Difficulty remembering things
  • Lack of interest in previously enjoyed activities
