Why ‘Thinspiration’ Is an Issue: Eating Disorders in Teens

The media is saturated with images of beautiful celebrities with perfect, stick skinny bodies. When teens look at these celebrities, they want to see themselves. Sometimes they’ll do just about anything to make themselves look “perfect.” This can come in many forms – makeup, hairstyles, fashion. But sometimes it can come in the form of an eating disorder. Teens with eating disorders are becoming more prevalent in today’s society.

Knowing the signs

Eating disorders have the highest mortality rates of any mental disorder. That’s a scary fact considering a little over half of all teen girls and nearly ⅓ of teen boys control their weight in an unhealthy way. It’s important to know the signs of an eating disorder within your child so you can get them help as soon as possible. Symptoms can include:

  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Painful burning in throat or chest
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Stress fractures and broken bones
  • Sore throat because of forced vomiting
  • Cold intolerance
  • Thin hair that falls out constantly
  • Dehydration

If your teen is experiencing a combination of these symptoms, get help as soon as possible. They probably have an eating disorder like anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa.

Online communities of teens with eating disorders are springing up across the internet. They post pictures of themselves as they lose weight and post images of thin celebrities to encourage others with eating disorders to continue on their path of destruction. They call this “thinspiration,” and it’s primarily prevalent on social media sites, such as Tumblr and Twitter.

These communities are extremely damaging to teens with eating disorders because they provide even more of a reason for your teen to continue being sick.
