As adolescence is a period of figuring out who one wants to be and how they define themselves by their interests, relationships, and personality traits, it’s natural that many teenagers are insecure throughout this period of their lives. As they resolve some of these internal conflicts, they are more likely to feel confident in themselves.

Our clinical model goes beyond using techniques, like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, to challenge negative thoughts about oneself. Trying to force teens not to obsess over negative feelings often just makes things even worse, especially if they internalize the message that their thoughts are “wrong”. Our goal is to help teens identify where these negative beliefs came from and help them process those issues in order to genuinely adopt alternative beliefs about themselves.

For example, instead of believing “I will never be good enough for this person,” teens may realize “other people accept me when I am my authentic self” or “I am good enough for myself.”

We help teens improve their self esteem by helping them collect evidence that these alternate beliefs are true. Teens work closely with a multidisciplinary treatment team to help them build confidence in different areas.

As a residential treatment program, where students participate in individual and group therapy, there is a strong focus on building a healthy group dynamic. Teens practice how to give and receive mutual support in order to feel more secure in their relationships. Being around other teens who have gone through similar struggles helps them own their experiences and let go of shame and anxiety.

Active Lifestyle Through Recreation Activities Helps Improve Self Esteem

Students engage in cross training, a variety of sports and activities such as volleyball, soccer, softball, and basketball; they also choose a recreational club to be a member of every 12 weeks. This focus on being active and engaged contributes to students’ overall health and wellness. In turn, this improves their outlook on life, their confidence, and body image. Many teens are anxious about participating in activities unless they know it is something they are good at. Our approach is focused on the therapeutic aspect of recreation activities as relatable teaching moments, where teens discover what they like to do and how to socialize with others in a healthy way.

Family Therapy Helps Boost Self Esteem in Struggling Teens

We encourage family involvement through weekly family therapy, flexible visitation schedules, and quarterly parent seminars. Therapists work closely with families to help them determine how to empower their child and support them when they need it. Teens are also coached on how to advocate for themselves and communicate with more confidence. Getting families on the same page helps all family members feel more supported when it is time for their child to transition home.
