The Benefits of Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Mental Health
Throughout our history at Elevations RTC, we have crafted an approach that has many benefits for teenagers. Our goal has always been to have a strong base for therapy to help teens and parents, and then we tweak the approach for each individual to get a customized experience. During the month of May, which is Mental Health Month, we want to cover a few of the major benefits of the Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) we use.
Families first looking into Elevations RTC might not know exactly what DBT can provide. We explain the entire approach to the therapy initially and continue to provide updates as a student goes through the program.
What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy?
DBT is a talking therapy that helps teenagers manage any mental health conditions and challenges they might be facing during this stage of their life. It can help with personality disorders and any extreme emotions or relationship issues that are hindering development. The goal is to help students develop a sort of acceptance while also creating changes in their behavior. By working on both sides, the recovery process is faster and more effective.
There are four main skills connected to DBT: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Focusing on acceptance and behavior change with these skills allows students to stay on track and see their development happen in front of their eyes.
What are the Major Benefits of DBT at Elevations RTC?
With numerous approaches available at residential treatment centers worldwide, we believe that DBT is the best of the best. There are many different benefits to the therapy, and the success rate often speaks for itself.
There is nothing worse than going into any type of therapy without a network of support. Whether it is family, friends, or a combination of both, no teenager should ever feel like they are going about things alone. DBT is a type of therapy that focuses a lot on developing strong social relationships when overcoming challenges. Healthy relationships, in general, will help students get to the next level, and there is no better way to develop those relationships than while on campus.
The entire campus of Elevations RTC is designed in part to help with this benefit of DBT. All teenagers are going through something simultaneously, and developing relationships and figuring out that they are not alone can make a huge difference. Boundaries are essential to a certain degree, but showing that there is a dependable network to count on helps significantly.
Students have so many opportunities to develop healthy relationships throughout the day. Whether it is bonding in class, during activities, or just around campus in general, this is a much better opportunity to develop long-lasting relationships.
Going back to the four primary skills connected to DBT, they provide benefits beyond the therapy itself. For example, having mindfulness allows people to be smarter with their decisions and think things through a little bit more. Emotional regulation can cut down on acting out in a certain way. Interpersonal effectiveness will work not only on campus but when returning home to develop relationships with friends, in the workforce, and in pretty much any area in life.
All the skills help with the initial therapy, but it has an eye on the bigger picture. These skills will come in handy time and time again, which might not be apparent to students in the beginning. However, it is never a bad thing to learn long-lasting skills at an early age.
Success on campus at Elevations RTC is one short-term goal our staff hopes to see with every student. The much more rewarding change for the better is hearing about graduates using these skills learned through DBT and having success months and even years later. Creating healthy habits and using versatile skills now help build a much better future.
Balance in Life
DBT is a type of therapy geared towards improving the quality of life for every single student. At Elevations RTC, we want to make sure that every student leaves our campus in a better state of mind than when they arrive. Some mental health challenges are more of a burden than others, but learning how to deal with them and also understand that life can be difficult is a huge step in the right direction.
Students can be facing personality disorders, eating disorders, depression, trauma and even suicidal thoughts before arriving at Elevations RTC. Helping cope with these major challenges can make a huge difference. It might seem like a nearly impossible task to get over significant issues without the structure of effective therapy, but years of experience with our staff ensures that students are always in great hands.
Disorders can begin to consume many students’ day-to-day lives as they continue to grow and mature into young adults. It is easy for everything to begin to spiral out of control without proper treatment. Balance is always a major key to success, cutting down on issues that are getting way too out of hand.
