Help for Troubled Teens: Parenting to Make Adolescence Worth It

Parenting is difficult. It’s hard. It’s wonderful. It’s a rollercoaster ride of emotions and experiences–no parent will argue with you on that. It can get especially intense around adolescence, where many teens lose their way, which is why help for troubled teens exists. You’re not a failure if your son or daughter ends up needing help from professionals–many families struggle with this challenge. In a recent Psychology Today article, the duties of parenting and the purpose of adolescence is discussed.

Parenting isn’t supposed to be easy

Being a parent is hard enough, then you add puberty and the drama of adolescence into it and it becomes almost impossible at times–especially if you have a struggling teen. As a parent, your purpose is to help guide your child safely towards responsible independence and a strong sense of self. Adolescence is often the hardest period of time for parents because this is the time that a child is becoming more than what you’ve taught them. They’re shaping their personality and striving for independence, even if they can’t handle it yet.

It’s not unheard of for teens to push back against parents. They have so many hormones and emotions, they feel like they’re being oppressed. Sometimes this gets out of hand, which leads to programs that provide help for troubled teens–but if your child isn’t to that point, you can do something to ease the tension. Offer up respect and loosen your hold a little bit. I know if feels necessary and safer to just keep them on a tight leash all the time, but in the end, that will just drive them away from you. A little bit at a time, allow them a bit more freedom–but have clear rules. For example, if their curfew has been 9PM for the past 4 years, tell them it’s now 10PM, but if they’re late, it goes right back to 9PM.

This allows trust and respect to form between you.

When it becomes too much to handle

Sometimes the issues that can arise in adolescence are too much for not only your child, but for the whole family. When your teen’s behavior becomes harmful or disrupts daily life, it may be time to seek out help for troubled teens. Many programs and therapeutic options are available to treat these types of challenges within families. You’re not alone.
