Bipolar Teens At High Risk Of Substance Use: Treatment for Bipolar Disorder in Teenagers

Treatment for bipolar disorder in teenagers may be more important than ever, according to a recent PsychCentral article. Research has shown that teens with bipolar disorder have a higher risk of getting involved with substance use–and the risk can follow them into adulthood. This makes treatment for bipolar disorder in teenagers more important and possibly life changing than before.

A higher risk of substance use

In the new study, researchers found that five years down the road, teens with bipolar disorder were five times as likely to get into substance use. The strongest link or reason for this was co-occurring conduct disorder.

Conduct disorder causes a child or adolescent to have issues following rules or social guidelines. The researchers were surprised that the connection was only to conduct disorder–not ADHD also. This is an important find because it gives professionals and researchers the knowledge to improve treatment for bipolar disorder in teenagers. The ultimate goal of treating something is to cure it, you can only do that with all the information–this is more information. Now we know that teens with bipolar disorder have a higher chance of becoming involved with substance use, especially when they also have conduct disorder.

This information could make screening more detailed. If an individual going into treatment for bipolar disorder in teenagers screens for both bipolar disorder and conduct disorder, the doctors and therapists involved need to consider the stronger risk of substance use.
